In one week you'll have a glimpse of the old and new and appreciate this small country's considerable contribution to the arts and crafts of Europe.
Friday LISBON • SINTRA • CASCAIS
Meet your guide at Lisbon airport. Transfer to your seaside hotel in Cascais. Afternoon visit to Sintra, Lord Byron ’s glorious Eden, a favorite retreat of royalty. Today it is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Afternoon walking tour of Sintra, including visit to Palacio da Vila with its fine azulejos/tiles and local antique shops, and a look at the Barnardo Collection of Modern Art. Welcome dinner.

Saturday SINTRA • LISBON • CASCAIS
Morning City Tour of Lisbon. Visit to Azulejo/Tile Museum or Museu de Arte Popular/Folk & Decorative Arts. Lunch in the old quarter of Alfama, in a local tasca. Visit to specialist craft shops. Return to Cascais along the Tagus River to see Belém: visit an exhibition at the Centro Cultural de Belém, dedicated to modern art; Monument to the Discoveries & Jerónimos Monastery. Free evening to enjoy this lovely seaside town.

Sunday CASCAIS • SINTRA • CASCAIS
Drive east into the rolling wheat fields of the Alentejo, with its white-washing villages, cork oak, and Sintra Market: experience it! The smell of fresh baked breads, the crowing of cockerels-for-sale, fresh cheese, Alentejano cowboy boots, gypsies selling lace, t-shirts, ceramics, the antiquities traders, and more… Lunch in the hills with a spectacular view. Return to Cascais late afternoon to relax, swim,stroll. Free evening.

Monday SINTRA • ÉVORA • PORTEL
Drive east into the rolling wheat fields of the Alentejo, with its white-washed villages, cork oak, and artisans dedicated to traditional crafts. Visit a carpet-making shop in Arraiolos. Continue to Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage town; the walking tour includes visits to local crafts shops. Free time to wander and eat lunch. Continue south to the village of Portel and our manor house hotel with pool. Cooking Class, followed by Alentejano dinner this evening.
