Saranjan's Quinta Retreat is based for one week in a manor house outside Lisbon, in the town of Sintra, a UNESCO World heritage town a few kilometers from Atlantic beaches. Pack and unpack only once! Rooms are airy, with private bath. Enjoy healthy, organic breakfasts before morn-ing walking for softies to a variety of nearby beauty spots and local area touring as well as excursions to Lisbon, Óbidos, Nazaré and Évora. Mediterranean style lunches and dinners with good regional wines. Music, art, fine shops and markets, and meetings with local personalities-all make this a special getaway. The tour begins and ends at Lisbon airport.
Transfer from Lisbon Airport to our manor house. Free morning. Afternoon walking tour of Sintra, including the ancient Moorish palace, gardens and galleries, with coffee and cakes at Piriquitas. Early welcome dinner. D
After breakfast explore the Sintra Sunday Market, one of Portugal's great markets. Late morning stroll to the Barnardo Collection at the Sintra Museum of Art, then transfer to Colares and nearby Apple Beach/Praia das Maças for a typical Portuguese Sunday lunch, with the local Colares wines. Beach walk and visit to nearby Azenhas do Mar. Return to Sintra for a free evening. B L
Day trip up the north coast to the medie-val walled craft village of Óbidos, the great Cistercian monastery at Alcobaça, scene of Portugal's Romeo & Juliet Story, and the fishing town of Nazaré. You'll have time to wander and shop, perhaps purchase one of those chunky fisherman's sweaters, and enjoy green wine/vinho verde with some fresh sardines on the beach. Free evening Sintra. B L
After breakfast, departure for Lisbon. First stop to see Belém and Jerónimos Monastery, then continue to a Fine Arts & Furniture Restoration Workshop this morning. A coffee break is followed by a tour of highlights of the Guelbenkian Museum, the country's premier collection. Rest your feet over a light lunch in a tasca in the Alfama. After lunch, wind through the city's old quarter, up to Castelo São Jorge for commanding views, then travel downhill on a tram to the fashionista center in Chiado and enjoy free time to wander and shop. Meet again as the shops are closing. This evening, taste Portugal's best known wine/vinho de porto at Lisbon's Port Wine Lodge. Dinner and the Portuguese Blues at our favorite Fado Club. B L D
Optional morning hike to to Castelo dos Mouros and Pena Palace, or free time in Sintra. Late morning transfer for a cooking demonstration and lunch. Free late afternoon and evening in Sintra-explore the labyrinth of streets, cafés and restaurants, late night shops, gardens and vistas. B L
Travel east from Lisbon into the Alentejo region, to see the UNESCO World Heritage town of Évora. Take a walking tour from the Roman temple to the 18th century University, with time to wander on your own, before we continue to a nearby winery, for a tour and tasting followed by a countryside lunch. After lunch, return to Sintra via a village dedicated to ceramics. Free evening in Sintra. B L
A morning excursion to Cabo da Roca, the westerly most point of Portugal, is a wonderful chance for a coastal walk. From here, continue to Cascais, a seaside fishing town and resort; enjoy free time for lunch and to explore this pretty white town's shops and seaside walk before continuing to Estoril and winding back to Sintra. Evening transfer to a favorite countryside restaurant for a farewell dinner. B D
