Meet at the parador late afternoon. Join your guide on a walking tour of Málaga, a thriving Mediterranean city. Hiking time 3 hours. After breakfast stop to see the fort in Salobreña, a pretty seaside town en route to the Sierra Nevada, the highest mountains in mainland Spain. Here, the villages of the Alpujarra are evocative of North Africa, reflecting earlier inhabitants-Moors who fled Granada to settle and cultivate the land. Flat roofed houses jut out over cliffs, a dramatic landscape favored by film-makers. This is ideal hiking terrain, offering easy to challenging routes. Watch for soaring birds of prey on your hike. After breakfast set out on a morning circuit hike in the high Alpujarra along the old Silk Route, where footpaths are remnants of the old Camino Real, mule-routes that crisscrossed Spain and followed mountain contours through oak, chestnut and poplar stands, alongside streams and across meadows. Watch for birds common in more northerly latitudes and a profusion of high altitude butterflies. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way. Back in Capileira, relax, wander, shop this afternoon in one of the Alpujarra's prettiest villages. You have a free evening. Overnight: as above B L

Day 4 CAPILEIRA • GRANADA

After breakfast transfer into Granada, one of Spain's most beautiful cities. Begin your city visit with a walking tour of the old Moorish quarter/Albaicín, the barrio from which the Moorish population fled to the Alpujarra. Enjoy a hosted Products of the Sierra Tasting-ham, cheese, olive oil, wine-before hotel check in and free time. This afternoon our local guide will lead you on a private tour of the Alhambra & Generalife palaces. Dinner this evening in the heart of Granada. Overnight: Palacio de los Navas B D

Day 5 GRANADA

Hiking time 4 hours. After breakfast transfer outside the city to a lush valley, from which you'll walk back into Granada, descending through Sacromonte, the gyspy quarter, an area of cave dwellings. Once back at your hotel, you're free to explore independently this afternoon and evening-visit the Royal Chapel's art treasures, the old souk, the Bib Rambla, and try one of the many cafés, tearooms, restaurants featuring North African and Andalucian cuisine Overnight: as above B
