A Journey Through Wine Country

March through October • 10 days / 9 nights

Begin your journey through Spanish Wine Country in the area to the north and south of Barcelona. Follow the Route of the Cistercians through Cava and Penedès, where monastery and winery appear as rocky outcrops on gentle slopes, and vineyards surround centuries-old farms, in turn surrounded by the lands of ancient monasteries. Visit mountainous Priorat in southern Catalunya, where the wines were once favored by Pliny the Younger, and now again are highly prized. Enjoy time on the Mediterranean at Sitges before traveling south to Andalucia. From your base in the former palace of the Marquis of Gomera, explore the nascent wine region of Ronda and the historic Sherry Country of Jerez & Sanlúcar. Along the way, visit Granada and its Alhambra, Ronda and romantic Sevilla.

 

Day 1 BARCELONA • SITGES

Arrive Barcelona; airport transfer to nearby seaside town of Sitges, a chic retreat for the bourgeoisie in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and today a fashionable town and resort. At leisure before early evening Welcome Reception. Overnight: Hotel San Sebastián Playa, on the beach Reception

Day 2 SITGES • BARCELONA • SITGESbuildings

Morning transfer to Barcelona for a full day to experience this exciting Mediterranean city. The day begins by looking at the contribution of Gaudí & the Modernists, including visits to Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera. Sit down to lunch in a nouvelle cuisine restaurant in the fashionable Eixample district. After lunch, continue exploring the city on a Gothic quarter walking tour, from the Roman foundations to the Picasso Museum. Visit the collection in the museum, then walk on the newly gentrified Born district, an area of private galleries and smart cafes. Gather in a nearby Cava/champagne bar, to taste/catar with a selection of local tapas. Afterwards, relax on the short transfer back to Sitges.

Day 3 SITGES • CAVA • PENEDES • SITGES

After breakfast, depart for Cava & Penedès regions: Tour and tasting at one of several bodegas-Segura Viudas/Masia Bach/Castellblanch. Traverse the vineyards to a Catalan farmhouse for lunch. In the afternoon, tour the ancient Monastery of Poblet with the monks, the first wine-makers in this region. Afterwards, continue to a family owned boutique winery for a hosted tour and tasting-Can Feixes/Can Rafols de Caus. Return to Sitges for a free evening.

Day 4 SITGES • PRIORAT • TARRAGONA • SITGES

After breakfast depart for the Province of Tarragona and the wine region of Priorato. Ascend into the rugged hills that overlook the sea for today's visits. Tour and tasting at one of the renowned local producers-Clos Mogador/Clos Martinet. Continue up and over and through terraced villages to a bodega lunch. After lunch, continue to the historic Scala Deí Cellars. After touring and tasting, return to Sitges. Free evening.

Day 5 SITGES • SEVILLA • OSUNA

Enjoy free time this morning on the beach/shopping/Modernist museum; lunchtime transfer to nearby Barcelona airport for flight to Sevilla. Transfer on arrival to Osuna, a Baroque era white Andalucian town. Walking tour, then free time before dinner at the palace.

Day 6 OSUNA • RONDA • OSUNA

Excursion to the dramatic Moorish town of Ronda. This is an emerging wine region in Spain with several superb boutique wineries producing from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Petit Verdot and other varietals. Touring and tasting in two of these before lunch in a colorful local restaurant. After lunch, enjoy a walking tour of one of the South's most beautiful historic towns. Return to Osuna early evening for a Wine Seminar & Tasting with tapas.

Day 7 OSUNA • GRANADA • OSUNA wine_group

Transfer to Granada; walking tour of the Alhambra & Generalife palaces. Light pintxos lunch, followed by walking tour of the old Moorish quarter/Albayzín and gypsy quarter of Sacromonte. Free time to wander and explore before early evening return to Osuna. Free evening.

Day 8 OSUNA • JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA • SANLÚCAR • OSUNA

Transfer to Jerez & Sanlúcar. Learn about the unique solera method on a visit in Jerez to Barbadillo/Gonzalez Byass. Brief walking tour of UNESCO World Heritage town of Jerez. Lunch in nearby Puerto de Santa Maria, from where Columbus set sail. Continue through the vineyards to Sanlúcar for visit to Rainera Perez Marin/Hidalgo. Afternoon return to Osuna. Free evening.

Day 9 OSUNA • SEVILLA

Morning transfer to Sevilla; City Tour on arrival, including walking tour of the old quarter of Santa Cruz and a visit to the Royal Palace and Cathedral. Hotel check in and free time until this evening. Farewell dinner followed by Flamenco show.
Overnight: Casa Imperial B D

Day 10 BARCELONA

After breakfast transfers to airport for connecting flight to Madrid. B
